How to Elope in Joshua Tree: Everything You Need to Know

Your Ultimate Guide to Eloping in Joshua Tree: Permits, Locations, Vendors & More

Are you dreaming of an intimate, magical wedding surrounded by the stunning desert landscape of Joshua Tree? You’re not alone! As a Southern California elopement photographer, Joshua Tree is one of my favorite locations for couples looking to say “I do” in a serene, natural setting. With its dramatic rock formations, unique Joshua Trees, and spectacular desert sunsets, this National Park offers an unforgettable backdrop for your wedding day.

I was born and raised in California, and Joshua Tree feels like a second home to me. After visiting countless times, I can confidently say it’s truly a place like no other. Whether you’re planning a sunrise ceremony or a sunset vow exchange, there’s no shortage of beautiful, peaceful locations in the park to make your elopement unforgettable.

If you’re wondering, “How can I elope in Joshua Tree?” and feeling overwhelmed by the planning process, you’ve come to the right place. This guide will help you navigate permits, locations, the best times for photos, places to stay, eat, and even vendor recommendations. Let’s dive in!

Elopement Permits & Fees in Joshua Tree

Do You Need a Permit to Elope in Joshua Tree?

Yes! You do need a permit to legally elope in Joshua Tree National Park. The permit process is straightforward and requires you to fill out the NPS Form 10-930 Short Form, which can be emailed to the park for approval. As your photographer, I can assist you with any questions and guide you through the process.

Permits typically take 10-15 days to be approved, however they make take longer so I recommend submitting your application at least one month in advance to ensure everything goes smoothly. The special use permit for eloping in the park costs $120.

Permits Info: Here’s the link for more details.

Entrance Fees

To enter Joshua Tree National Park, there’s a $30 per car fee, which covers a 7-day pass. If you’re planning to bring guests, I recommend carpooling to keep costs down.

If you plan on visiting other National Parks, consider purchasing the America the Beautiful Pass for $80, which grants access to all U.S. National Parks for a year. I use it for all my trips and weddings—it’s a fantastic investment. You can purchase it either at the park or also online here.

How to Get a Marriage License in Joshua Tree

To get married in California, you’ll need a California marriage license, which typically costs around $90-$100. You can obtain it from any county clerk’s office in California. If you’re coming from out of state, the nearest office to Joshua Tree is in San Bernardino County.

Marriage License Info: Find out more here.

Do You Need an Officiant?

Technically, yes, you need an officiant to legally marry you in Joshua Tree. However, you can either hire a professional officiant or have a friend or family member become an officiant (this is easy and free to do online).

You’ll also need at least one witness, which can be your photographer (me!) or another friend or family member. Many couples choose to legally marry at a courthouse before their elopement day to keep things relaxed and paperwork-free on the day of the ceremony.

Don’t worry, whether you marry at the courthouse or in the park, it doesn’t make your day any less special. You can still have a deeply meaningful ceremony in the desert, exchanging vows and celebrating your love.

When’s the Best Time to Elope in Joshua Tree?

Choosing the right time of year is key to ensuring both great weather and an intimate experience.

Best Seasons for Weather & Avoiding Crowds:

The best time to elope in Joshua Tree is during the mild spring (March-May) and fall (September-November) seasons. The weather is ideal, with cooler temperatures and fewer crowds.

Avoid summer months when temperatures can exceed 100°F—definitely not ideal for outdoor ceremonies!

Sunrise or Sunset Ceremonies:

If you’re looking for the best photos, consider a sunrise or sunset ceremony. The desert light during these times is absolutely magical! I recommend sunrise ceremonies for couples who want a more relaxed, intimate experience, as you can spend the rest of the day exploring or enjoying your after-wedding glow.

Many photographers, including myself, offer sunrise-to-sunset packages to help you make the most of your elopement day, capturing everything from your early-morning prep to the stunning sunset ceremony.
